![]() Importantly, don't try to read the whole thing and understand it. Start thinking about stat-driven games, where behind-the-scenes data and calculations are important. Read the Ren'py manual beyond the Quickstart section. Start looking at other Ren'py projects I'm sure people are posting their source code all over the place. Do some Python courses (you'll find plenty online for free) you'll soon discover that what you were doing has more nuance than you were aware. But once you've got comfortable with basic functionality, I'd advise branching out. I don't know how necessary it would be starting out, because Ren'py looks like it's got enough resources to get started. Ren'py is based on Python, and there are plenty of resources out there for that language. (Both self-coded, and in Inkle Studios' tool ink ink is more limited, being a pure stream of text, but I thought I should point it out.) I haven't used Ren'py, but I have done some work with interactive fiction. I'm intrigued! I'm a (lightly) published short story writer and it seemed like this could be a way to vent creative energy while learning a form of coding.ĭo any of you use it? Any advice for new users? Any Ren'Py novels you're working on or would recommend? ![]() ![]() I watched a tutorial that walked through how to create a simple branching story which included graphics and music. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it uses the "Ren'Py" engine, and it's a free download. I enjoyed it enough to do a little research into how the game's creator built it. (I'd love to review it on the video game forum, but I don't think it would pass moderator muster.) Last month I discovered an adult interactive video novel that I've played several times and have really enjoyed it - it's kind of a sexy Endless Quest book. I've always been interested in learning some kind of coding, but it felt a little overwhelming and I figured I'd lose interest unless I found a coding project that aligned with my personal interests.
